Good Snacks Vs. Bad Snacks
There are so many snacks to choose from for your child. At Pediatric Dental Associates and Orthopedics, we encourage our patients to choose healthy snacks that will not only provide good nutrition, but will also promote good oral health care. We never want to take the fun out of being a kid, but we always want to recommend moderation and caution with certain foods, especially ones with high sugar content.
What are some snacks that are good for your teeth?
- Yogurt– Yogurt is high in calcium and protein. This can help build strong teeth.
- Cheese– Cheese is high in calcium and helps cleans your teeth. It also raises the PH in your mouth.
- Leafy Greens– Leafy greens in Vitamin B, which helps treats gum disease in pregnant women.
- Apples– Apples are high in fiber and water, which promote saliva production which helps rinse away bacteria
- Carrots– High in Fiber and Water, increase saliva production,
- Almonds– High in Protein. Easy snack and can be found in small packs for your kids lunch
- Water– Keeps you hydrated and reduces acidic intake.
- Milk– Helps build strong bones and strong teeth. A word of caution: it does have natural sugar. We suggest drinking milk with a meal or with a snack, but it should not be carried around. It should also never be left with a sleeping baby to drip on their teeth or in their mouths.
There are also other snacks that can be deceptively bad for your teeth:
- Fruit Snacks– Stick in your teeth and do not come out between teeth, collecting sugars and carbs on the teeth. Make sure your child always flosses after eating fruit snacks.
- Citric Acids– Citric Acid can be found in various fruits such as oranges. While they have great health benefits, the citric acid can be destructive. Make sure to have your child rinse their mouth after eating anything high in citric acid.
- Gummy Vitamins– Sticky substance like fruit snacks that can get stuck in between teeth.
- Candy– Due to its high sugar content, it can cause cavities if not moderated.
- Juice– Contains a high amount of sugar.
- Coffee, tea, and soda– Stains your teeth. We suggest limiting these drinks and drinking from a straw when consuming them.
- Sports Drinks– Sports drinks are incredibly high in sugar. We suggest supplementing with water or choosing the lower sugar option. To encourage drinking water, we suggest purchasing your child a stylish water bottle that they would refill with water instead of choosing a sports drink.
- Energy Drinks– Full of caffeine, sugar, and carbonation which can cause decay on your teeth.
